I know the grind.</h4><h5>I have worked as a substitute teacher in Lexington 1 schools, helped businesses navigate the COVID pandemic, worked for the state Medicaid program, and currently work as a claims examiner.</h5><p><strong>A Columbia area native,</strong> I was born and raised in Forest Acres--just outside of Columbia proper. I attended schools in Richland 1, graduating from A.C. Flora High School in 2011 and earning both a BA and an MBA from University of South Carolina Aiken in 2017 and 2023, respectively.</p><p>My mom worked for Dominion Energy (formerly SCE&amp;G) for 35 years before retiring, and my older brother went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and serve in the U.S. Army for 20 years. In 2017, my mom and I moved to Red Bank looking for home and we found it here.</p>

<h2>We need our lawmakers to understand what it means to be working class in South Carolina.</h2><p>I have worked, and still do work, paycheck to paycheck--as do thousands of people in our district and in our state. Wages are rising but costs are rising even faster, and the Legislature has not done nearly enough to address it. From the Senate refusing to conform the state tax code to the latest federal tax code for weeks to the House refusing to suspend state gas taxes for even thirty days when the Iran war started, policy nobody asked for are now hurting South Carolina families including right here in Lexington.</p><p>Very few members of the Legislature currently punch a clock. It is time to change that. We need our lawmakers to understand what it means to be working class in South Carolina, and for that to be central to our decision making.</p>

<p>We must fully fund public schools as our own laws require. Teacher pay must continue to rise to keep that pay competitive with surrounding states. We must empower teachers to teach their students and not merely prepare students for tests.</p>

<p>We need to plan for the future. Our Legislature should be thinking at least fifty years ahead on roads, schools, housing, and the infrastructure that comes with them. This does not mean giving up the small town character of towns across our state including ours in Red Bank and South Congaree .</p>

<h2>Smart Growth for <br>South Carolina</h2>

<p><strong>We must invest in improving our infrastructure. </strong>The Legislature needs to invest in roads, schools, broadband, water, and sewer systems to support growth and improve quality of life. To that end we must be able to trust leaders and decision making in agencies like SCDOT and Dominion Energy, and we will support strong oversight of these agencies tasked with maintaining our infrastructure.</p>

<h2>Infrastructure</h2>

<p>Everyone deserves to be safe where they are. Our Legislature needs to ensure that state and local law enforcement, fire departments, and EMTs have the resources they need to do their jobs, and do them well. We must also fight the root causes of crime by expanding economic opportunity, housing and access to homeownership, and cracking down on repeat offenders.</p>
